Some Kingsport Residents Voice Opposition To Ammunition Plant’s Plans For Expansion
Some citizens who live near Kingsport’s Holston Army Ammunition Plant are voicing their opposition to the army contractor’s plans to expand production at the Model City facility. In a public hearing last night residents were concerned about the plant’s open burning of munitions and contaminated waste, which are illegal in the United States, but the military is waived because they say there is no other safe method to dispose of the plant’s waste. In order for the ammunition plant to proceed with the expansion plans, it first must conduct a 450 million dollar upgrade to its infrastructure at the facility located on several thousand acres of land along Highway 11W in the Allandale Community of Kingsport.
