Scammers Using Technology To Try And Spoof Smyth County Residents With IRS Scam
Reports of an IRS scam in Smyth County have gotten the attention of authorities as scammers are using technology to try and fool residents. The scammers are trying to convince people they owe back taxes and there’s going to be a warrant issued for their arrest. The victim is then told to purchase big, retail, store gift cards and the scammers then obtain the card numbers. Technology is being used by the scammers to spoof the sheriff’s department’s phone number, making it seek like the call is originating from the sheriff’s department. Sheriff authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant and is assuring them the calls are not coming from the Smyth County Sheriff’s Department.
