Resolution: Proposed courthouse in Abingdon would grow present traffic snafu at Cummings Street
Concerns for a new courthouse near an already heavily-traveled street are some of the reasons the Abingdon Town Council voted to endorse a resolution opposing a county plan to revamp a former Kmart center into a new courthouse location.
A recent traffic study revealed two new lanes will have to be constructed at the Cummings Street / Cook Street intersection that comes with a $2 to $3 million price tag.
“I’m a traffic engineer and I think putting the courthouse in location where traffic congestion is a problem is not a very good thing to do,” said Mayor Wayne Craig.
