Man Allegedly on Meth Initiates Pursuit on Highway 11-W, Crashes Vehicle
A Grainger County man is facing several charges after police say he initiated a pursuit in Hawkins County that ended in a rollover.
A report from the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office says they clocked an individual traveling at a high rate of speed (70mph in a 50) on Highway 11W. Officers pursued the driver, Travis Coffey, 35, who refused to pull over. After turning on a few side roads, Coffey lost control of his car on a sharp curve around Carpenter Road, striking a ditch and rolling on his top. Coffey initially refused officer commands to exit the vehicle, but shortly after, he and a female passenger got out. Coffey was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries, and admitted to a deputy to using methamphetamine prior to the crash. He was charged with reckless endangerment, DUI 2nd, Driving on a revoked license (5th offense), evading arrest, and speeding.
He is scheduled to be back in Hawkins County court next Wednesday.
