Remains of Coeburn soldier killed during Normandy battle in WWII identified
Military officials have identified the remains of a Southwest Virginia soldier who was killed during the Invasion of Normandy in World War II.
Information from the POW/MIA Accounting Agency said the body of Navy Seaman First Class Stewart Jordan was exhumed from the Normandy American Cemetery for re-examination and confirmation.
Jordan was 20-years-old when he departed the town of Coeburn for combat duty. Records show he was fatally wounded on June 12, 1944, aboard the USS Nelson. A final burial date will be scheduled.
