Virginia sheriff: I’ll create an armed militia to protect gun owner rights

More than half of the counties in Virginia have passed resolutions to recognize themselves as Second Amendment sanctuaries—a symbolic stand for citizens’ right to carry and own weapons.

One state sheriff is willing to form a local militia to insure his locality deflects possible gun legislation from a Democratic-controlled General Assembly. Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins repeated his intentions made to county lawmakers on social media that he is willing to deputize thousands of residents to protect a person’s right to own a gun.

Governor Ralph Northam has promised sweeping gun law reforms when the assembly goes into session in January.
