Court Documents: Former finance controller at Greentech in Johnson City accused of embezzlement
A former finance controller at Greentech Environmental in Johnson City is facing charges in federal court on accusations he embezzled over one million dollars from the company.
Shain Chappell is charged with wire fraud and filing a false tax return. According to court documents filed in U.S District Court in Greeneville, the alleged defrauding scheme began around July of 2017. Prosecutors say Chappell would incur expenses on a personal credit card for luxury items like tickets of around $2,400 to UT sporting events, and a hot tub at a cost of over $21,000. He would then make unauthorized transfers of money to reflect compensation from Greentech, which he would then conceal in the company’s records. He also reportedly filed false tax incomes by under reporting his income during 2017 and 2018.
He is facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
