Tennessee and Virginia among states calling on FTC for tougher rules to protect children’s online activites
24 state attorney generals including Tennessee and Virginia are calling on the Federal Trade Commission to tighten rules on collection of personal information of children under 13 online.
A bipartisan letter was recently sent to the FTC asking for tougher rules in addition to further restrictions on using collected information to track children activities online. Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery III says without modification to the current rule, companies will continue to build profiles on children based on collected data.
Below is a statement from Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring:
“Today it seems like technology is involved in every aspect of our lives and in our children’s lives,” said Attorney General Herring. “It is critical that we keep our children and their personal information safe online, which is why I am urging the FTC to strengthen its rules and prohibit technologies from collecting a child’s personal information.”
