Virginia General Assembly bill hoping to adopt “Hands-Free” cell phone law

Lawmakers in Virginia could consider a bill in the upcoming weeks that could have the Commonwealth join other states in going hands free.
The bill introduced by District 36 senator Scott Surovell, hopes to make driving and holding a phone illegal, much like the same law that went into effect in July in Tennessee. Currently in Virginia, it is illegal to text or read emails and texts while driving, and it’s also against the law to hold a phone while driving through a construction zone.
If passed, the bill would take effect January 1st, 2021. The 2020 General Assembly session starts next Wednesday.
