Tennessee AG applauding tougher federal legislation passed on robocalls

Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery is applauding the passage of federal legislation that toughens laws on robocalls.

The legislation, known as the Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal and Deterrence Act, was signed into law by President Donald Trump on December 30th. This is designed to combat robocalls in ways like prioritizing industry-wide implementation of call authentication protocols, allowing voice providers to adopt call-blocking technology at no additional costs to customers. It also requires the FCC to put new limits on legal robocalls as well as the organizations who make and those who receive those calls.

Robocalls reportedly increased by 36% in 2018. The bill passed in the House and Senate while receiving nearly unanimous bi-partisan support. Several lawmakers introduced and sponsored the House version of the bill including Tennessee Representative David Kustoff and co-sponsored by Tennessee Representatives Tim Burchett, Chuck Fleischmann, David Roe, and John Rose. The senate bill was co-sponsored by Marsha Blackburn.
