Sullivan County Officers Cleared In Deadly Officer Involved Shooting

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s officers involved in a deadly, September, 2019 officer involved shooting have been cleared and were justified when they returned fire…killing the suspect. A grand Jury report states the officers were responding to a call that Atillio Gilmartin who was wanted on multiple warrants for his arrest had been spotted on Highway 75. The 22 minute pursuit continued as Gilmartin fired shots from his moving vehicle. The chase came to an end on Silver Grove Road near Bluff City when Gilmartin ran out of gas and exited his car firing at officers. The officers responded, striking Gilmartin. He was pronounced dead on the scene, an autopsy revealed Gilmartin had drugs in his system at the time of his death.
