NEW: Health officials confirm first COVID-19 case in Washington County, Virginia

The first case of coronavirus in a patient in Washington County, Virginia was confirmed Wednesday by officials with the Mount Rogers Health District.

The report said the person was in their 60s and had just returned from international travel. The person is in self-isolation and the district says there is no concern over community contact.

“We continue to see new cases of COVID-19 throughout the Commonwealth, and it’s now in our area. This reminds us how very critical it is that people follow public health guidelines on social distancing and good hygiene,” said Dr. Karen Shelton, director of the Mount Rogers Health District. “Social distancing is one of the most effective strategies in limiting the spread of COVID-19, and lessening the impact of this pandemic.

The Virginia Department of Health announced 391 patients are now being treated for COVID-19.
