NEW: Virginia under stay-at-home order following Governor Northam decree

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam issued a stay-at-home order to all residents on Monday, allowing travel for only essential jobs or for trips for needed supplies like groceries and medicine.

The order is in effect until June 10.

Northam said recent displays of packed beaches over the weekend, calling them selfish, showed the recommendation of social distancing is going unheard in some cases, further increasing the threat of more COVID-19 cases which reached the 1,000 mark in the last 48 hours.

“This is a community-wide effort and I am expecting all of you to comply,” Northam said in his remarks from Richmond who said the move to keep people away from each other was a suggestion at first but is now an order.

He noted those seen gathering in crowds of 10 or more will be cited for a class 1 misdemeanor.

State parks and beaches will remain open under social distancing guidelines for exercise and fishing, the governor said.
