UPDATE, 2:30 p.m.
Governor Ralph Northam plans to request a change in the May primary elections due to COVID-19 restrictions placed on the public. He is proposing to move those elections to November.
The General Assembly will consider the request during the veto session scheduled for April 22.

The Smyth County Department of Elections recommends residents who want to vote in the May 5 election do so by requesting a ballot by mail through the state election office.
The office is also offering curbside voting by appointment but voters must complete the state absentee ballot application. They recommend citing Reason Code 2A or COVID-19 as the supporting information.
The final day to register to vote is April 13 while the last day to apply for an absentee ballot is April 28.
