Over 98,000 in TN and VA file for first time jobless claims last week

Over 98,000 people in TN and VA have filed for unemployment claims in the last week.

According to data from the US Department of Labor, just over 37,000 claims were filed in TN, including 1,781 in Northeast TN. In the last month, over 341,000 first time jobless claims were filed across the Volunteer State. In the Commonwealth, over 61,000 filed for jobless claims last week. Over the last month, Virginia has seen more than 440,000 unemployment claims filed.

The Department of Labor reports a seventh straight week of multi-million unemployment claim filings, 3.16 million for the latest report, now affecting around 33 million Americans with COVID-19 continuing to take its toll on the economy.
