Over 82,000 in TN and VA file for first time jobless claims last week

Nearly 83,000 people filed for first time jobless claims last week in TN and VA.

Those numbers come from the latest US Department of Labor report, including just over 29,000 unemployment claims filed in TN, with 1,101 of those coming from Northeast TN. It’s a 7,015 claim decrease from the filing period through May 2nd, but the state’s department of labor says over 500,000 claims have filed over an eight week period beginning on March 15th. In VA, around 53,000 unemployment claims were filed, which sees a 6,235 claim decrease from the week prior.

Nationwide, officials say 2.98 million filed for first time jobless claims, now putting the total number over the last two months of first time claims to over 36 million Americans.
