84,362 new unemployment claims filed last week in TN and VA
Nearly 85,000 new unemployment claims were filed last week in Tennessee and Virginia.
According to figures from the US Department of Labor, new claims filed in Tennessee for the week ending May 23 just reached over 26,000, including 902 in Northeast TN. It marks the 10th straight week of job losses in the Volunteer state due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with the state department of labor reporting that 558,621 new claims have been filed during that time.
Virginia reported 58,591 additional jobless claims filed last week, a nearly 14,000 claim increase from the week prior. Across America, 2.1 million new unemployment claims were filed, bringing total job losses to over 40 million since mid-March.
