Vigil to honor George Floyd scheduled for Monday night at historic Bristol sign

Officials with the Sullivan County, Tennessee Democratic Party are hosting a candlelight vigil tonight beginning at 8:30 p.m. at the historic Bristol sign on State Street.

The statement issued by the party on Monday says the gathering is to honor George Floyd, the Texas native who later died after a Minneapolis policeman placed his knee on the back of Floyd’s throat while he was detained last week, and “all his brothers and sisters who have lost their lives because of systematic racism in the United States of America.”

Event organizers said they encourage participants to practice safety measures outlined by federal and state health officials to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
