US Dept of Labor weekly jobless claims report shows 54,986 new claims filed in TN and VA

Nearly 55,000 new unemployment claims were filed last week in TN and VA.

According to the weekly jobless claims report from the US Department of Labor, TN saw 22,784 new claims, including 694 in Northeast TN, while VA saw 32,202 new claims for the week ending May 30th.

Both states saw a decrease in new jobless claim filings from the week prior, and even with each state lifting more virus restrictions to businesses, it represents an 11th straight week of job losses as the COVID-19 pandemic is showing no signs of slowing down on the economy.

Total unemployment claims filed across the country sat around 1.87 million for last week.
