KPD: Scam alert issued after woman was defrauded of over $12,000
Kingsport Police have issued a scam warning in the wake of a local woman that was defrauded by scammers of over $12,000.
Officials say the fraud was committed by an unknown scammer contacting the victim’s place of business using real names of officers claiming they had an outstanding warrant for her arrest, which could only be satisfied by paying a large fine or court costs through non-traditional payment. Police say fortunately they have been able to trace much of the funds and have been able to return that money to the victim.
Kingsport Police say if you receive any phone call like this, you should hang up and report it to authorities as they say they would never extort money to satisfy an outstanding arrest warrant.
