Contura Energy to idle West Virginia coal operations, layoff 177 workers to help finances
Coal provider Contura Energy has laid off more than 100 miners and cut their capital costs to strengthen the Bristol, Virginia company’s financial performance for the remainder of 2020.
Contura announced a shutdown of the Ruby Energy underground mine and the Delbarton Prep Plant due to what the company called sustained adverse market conditions, resulting in a total of 177 workers without a job by August.
Plans for a $60 million construction project at their Greene County, Pennsylvania operation. That Cumberland Mine has been on the market while the company continues to mine coal there as part of a contract that expires in December of 2022.
