Supervisors to hear from petitioners who want Confederate monuments removed from Washington County, Virginia Courthouse
A petition circulated online to remove two Confederate monuments erected outside the Washington County, Virginia Courthouse in Abingdon will be formally presented to lawmakers on Tuesday.
The regular monthly session of the Board of Supervisors is scheduled to have a discussion on a request to have the historical markers moved to the Sinking Springs cemetery also located in downtown that is the final resting place for Civil War soldiers and two antebellum Virginia governors.
More than 1,800 signatures have been collected on the petition located on Change.org. Document author Heather Evans said some supervisors have already received calls that want the statue and stone left at the courthouse.
