Director of Virginia sheriff’s group wary of criminal justice reform special session
The director of Virginia’s Sheriff’s Association says he’s afraid lawmakers will rush to judgment in an upcoming special session aimed at criminal justice reform.
John Jones says bad policies could come out of a Democratic-controlled body that wants chokeholds banned, giving prosecutors access to all officers’ disciplinary records during cases, and downgrading assault on a police officer from a felony to a misdemeanor if the officer is not injured.
The ACLU is pushing for new standards of conduct that would result in an officer losing their accreditation if the rules were violated.
The session is scheduled for Aug. 18.
