US Dept of Labor Jobless Claims Report 8/20: 30,577 first time jobless claims filed in TN and VA
Over 30,000 first time jobless claims were filed last week in Tennessee and Virginia.
The weekly unemployment claims report from the US Dept of Labor says for the week ending Aug. 15, 13,806 Tennessee residents and 16,771 Virginia residents filed for first time unemployment claims. Both states experienced an uptick of 3,000 more claims than the last reporting week.
In Northeast TN, the State Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development reported our seven local counties had 749 first time claims last week, while 10,944 claims were continued.

TN- 13,806 (10,620 last week, 3,186 more)
VA- 16,771 (13,265 last week, 3,506 more)
Total- 30,577
Below is the Northeast Tennessee claims breakdown:
Carter County- 60 new claims (944 continued claims)
Greene County- 128 new claims (1,877 continued claims)
Hawkins County- 63 new claims (1,120 continued claims)
Johnson County- 30 new claims (170 continued claims)
Sullivan County- 253 new claims (3,638 continued claims)
Unicoi County- 29 new claims (307 continued claims)
Washington County- 186 new claims (2,888 continued claims)
Total- 749 new claims (10,944 continued claims)
