Bill To End Qualified Police Immunity Fails In Virginia Legislature
Two Virginia Democrats voted with Republicans on Monday
to defeat legislation that would have ended qualified immunity for Commonwealth police officers. Opponents argued it would result in frivolous lawsuits and make it difficult to hire and retain police officers. The Associated Press says the bill would have allowed people who allege police violations of their civil rights to sue and collect money damages in state courts, ending the immunity that shields police officers from liability.
