Preservation project to historical assets at Andrew Johnson National Cemetery scheduled to start Sept. 14

A 14-month long preservation project is set to begin later this month at the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery in Greeneville.

The National Park Service says cracks in the marble and corrosion of iron pins are being found in many of cemetery’s historical assets, including at the President’s monument and family grave markers. Several of the sidewalks have cracks in them, and parking access does not meet 2010 ADA standards. The project plans to fix the cracks and corrosion in the marble in addition to making the park better accessible for all. The National Park Service says during the construction, portions of the cemetery may be inaccessible for visitors.

The project is scheduled to start Sept. 14.
