Appalachia exploring contract with county for police protection

The town of Appalachia is exploring the idea of contracting with Wise County officials to provide police protection as a potential cost saving to residents.

Town Manager Fred Luntsford said Appalachia has fielded no less than 10 officers with an annual cost of nearly $300,000. At the same time, the department has lost personnel due to higher wages and retirement benefits.

Luntsford said several towns in the Commonwealth have contracted with counties to help provide officers 24/7. He said that plan could keep the town council from having to raise taxes to help fund a police increase.

Council concurred with Luntsford and talks between the town and county will continue.
