Student government leaders at ETSU vote on resolution to sever certain ties with Milligan University
“I, as a lesbian, black, Christian student at ETSU feel nothing but love at ETSU but I do not feel the same way at Milligan.”
Student Government Association Senator Gracie Carter speaking prior to a vote on a resolution that was approved 17 to 5 that supports ETSU severing ties financially and in athletic competition with neighboring Milligan University.
The statement that will now be sent to ETSU administrators for evaluation urges the Johnson City school to stop any partnership with the private Christian campus near Elizabethton because of what the SGA called a forced resignation of a gay professor at Milligan.
“To continue with an organization that not only discriminates but is lawfully allowed to do so just feels like a slap in the face to me and a misuse of the funds that I bring every year in tuition,” Carter said.
Other SGA members who were against the stance said ETSU had no business in chiming-in on Milligan or the way they run their school.
