Three SW Virginia counties look to finance fish farm venture
An aquaculture project is in the works in an effort to diversify the economy in a portion of Southwest Virginia.
Documents from the Coalfield Economic Development Authority detail the plan called ‘Project Jonah.’ It calls for a large fish farm to be constructed in the region and provide various species that would be used for the commercial seafood industry.
Buchanan, Russell, and Tazewell counties would work in concert with a company based in Isreal called Aqua Moaf that already has 50-plus facilities constructed around the world. The plan calls for each of those counties to invest $1 million.
