New gun control laws in Virginia , passed by the Democratically controlled General Assembly apparently has had little impact on gun sales in the Commonwealth. Southwest Virginia and the rest of the state recorded a record number of background checks for gun purchases during 2020. Gun sellers requested over 650 thousand background checks through the end of October, that’s up 83 percent over the same period in 2019 and the highest number since the state began keeping records in 1989.
