Town of Greeneville cancels Christmas in Downtown in-person events due to COVID-19
The Town of Greeneville has decided against moving forward with the in-person portion of their Christmas in Downtown Event scheduled for next month due to continued rise in COVID-19 cases in the region.
Event organizers made that announcement on Friday and issued the following statement, which can be viewed below:
“After consulting with partners, merchants, local governments, and volunteers, Main Street: Greeneville, coordinating partner of Christmas in Downtown – A Holiday Celebration, announces that the difficult decision was made to cancel this year’s in-person festivities scheduled for Friday, December 4, 2020. We know how much the tree lightings downtown at Town Hall along with gathering at the Greene County Courthouse for singing, caroling, celebration candles, arrival of and pictures with Santa, hay wagons, cookies decorating, making magic reindeer food, movies, and children’s activities, things that make the season merry and bright mean to this community. It is evident in the crowd sizes and the look of joy on every faces. However, in light of the growing number of COVID-19 cases in the region, we cannot risk further spread during the holidays. It is first and foremost important that each person remains safe and looks forward to a better year in 2021.”
The town followed up by saying they are excited that aspects of the event will remain including virtual tree lightings, some merchants and attractions will open with possible extended hours, and a wreath decorating contest.
