Appalachian Voices Calls For Fossil Fuel Transition To Cleaner Energy
Wednesday we reported on a study that shows the coal fired power plant in Wise County, owned and operated by Dominion Energy may be headed to an early closure due to operating below its full capacity. Today, an advocate for a healthy economy in the Appalachian region is calling for the Virginia General Assembly to require transparency regarding expected power plant closures to local officials and state agencies to assist in planning for the transition from fossil fuels to a cleaner energy. Appalachian Voices, a driving force in America’s shift from fossil fuels has had an office in Wise County since 2015 focused on supporting the coalfield counties in adapting to the declining coal industry. The Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center in Wise employees 153 workers and contributes more than eight million dollars in tax revenue to the County.
