COVID kicks 3-7 Volunteers out of Liberty Bowl and $2.4 million payout
A New Year’s Eve bowl for the 3-7 Tennessee Volunteers has been wiped out by the coronavirus.
UT Athletics released a statement that said multiple COVID cases among student-athletes and staff including head coach Jeremy Pruitt combined with contact tracing will keep the Vols out of the Liberty Bowl game in Memphis against West Virginia.
That will also result in the university losing out on a $2.4 million paycheck—the payout each team receives for playing in the game. That’s a hard financial pill to swallow for the Knoxville school that asked several athletic team officials to take a pay cut due to COVID cutbacks.
