East TN US Attorney releases statement on Wednesday’s violent attack at the US Capitol

One local federal prosecutor is speaking out following Wednesday’s insurrection at the US Capitol during the election certification process.

US Attorney for the Eastern District of TN J. Douglas Overbay said Thursday that he was shocked and appalled by the mob violence that occurred in Washington. Overbay says his office is committed to prosecuting those whose conduct crosses the line from peaceful protest to violence and other criminal activity in violation of federal law.

Five people including a Capitol police officer died in the attack.
