Virginia Senator and gubernatorial candidate Amanda Chase facing censure from lawmakers for attending ‘Stop the Steal’ rally
A Virginia senator is facing the possibility of being censured by her fellow lawmakers in Richmond for her participation in the ‘Stop the Steal’ rally at the U.S. Capitol last week.
Senator Amanda Chase, R-Chesterfield, used her personal privilege on the floor to verbally spar with her fellow senators as well as repeat refuted claims of voter fraud that she said helped President-elect Joe Biden steal a win on Election Day.
Chase also said it was hypocritical for Democrats to criticize her when they took part in Black Lives Matter rallies during the summer where statutes were toppled and people were injured.
“Any effort by this body to censure me is completely outrageous,” Chase said. “…So if you’re going to call me out, I’m going to start calling people out in this room as well.”
Senate Minority Leader Tommy Norment, R-James City, verbally scolded Chase for her remarks and reminded her of the decorum expected inside the Senate chamber.
“A point of personal privilege is not to be prostituted for an individual for personal political promotion,” said Norment.
