Appalachian State to remove names from dorm buildings tied to racial injustice
Appalachian State’s board of trustees has voted to remove the names from two student dorm buildings on campus because of their ties to racial injustice.
Chancellor Shari Everts announced that Lovill Hall will become Elkstone Hall while Hoey Hall is being renamed Dogwood Hall.
App State began investigating the history of Clyde Hoey and Edward Lovill in 2017 but the push to change the names gained momentum during the summer during protests condemning the death of George Floyd.
Lovill was a Confederate soldier and later pushed for white supremacy while serving as a state lawmaker. Hoey served in both the House and Senate and was a proponent for African American segregation, according to information published by the school.
