Bill That Would Abolish Virginia Death Penalty Advances In Committee
A Virginia bill that would abolish the death penalty in the Commonwealth advances out the Senate Judiciary Committee , despite warnings from opponents. Senate Bill 1165 is drawing the attention of abolition proponents who cite historical racial disparities in the death penalty’s use, the cost, and lack of deterrence and the danger of executing an innocent person.More than a dozen people, including representatives for Governor Ralph Northam, Criminal Defense lawyers, the League of Women Voters and religious organizations spoke in favor of the bill. The bill now goes to the Finance Committee. The bill’s co-sponsor is the only republican to join democrats who are supporting the measure.
