US Energy agency awards $57.5 million project to Erwin’s Nuclear Fuel Services
Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin has been awarded a $57.5 million federal contract for the first phase of a design and pilot demonstration of highly enriched uranium conversion and purification services.
The US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Complex in Oak Ridge is currently involved in a massive overhaul of equipment and other outdated aspects of the plant. That was one of the factors in sending this bridging project to NFS, according to the agency.
Federal energy authorities also noted that the project will not result in any jobs being lost at the Y-12 facility in the Knoxville metro area.
