Bill to limit independent TN county health boards power during health emergency passes House
A bill filed by a Knoxville lawmaker seeking to transfer power from health officials to county mayors with independent health departments like Sullivan County during a public health emergency has passed in the House.
Rep. Jason Zachary’s HB7 was approved Monday by a 67-26 vote, but was amended to limit county boards of health to an advisory role during a declared public health emergency by the county mayor such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. The full text of the agreed upon amendment can be read by clicking here.
The mayor would hold exclusive power to make rules and regulations while county health boards would advise their decision making. The Senate version is still in committee.
