Tennessee and Virginia part of 41-state settlement with medical debt collector
Attorney generals in both Tennessee and Virginia announced a $21 million settlement with a debt collection agency that was the victim of a data breach that exposed sensitive medical information of 7 million customers.
More than 132,000 Tennesseans were potentially violated when a hacker got unauthorized access to the records kept by the American Medical Collection Agency from August 2018 to March 2019.
American Medical filed for bankruptcy shortly after the violation and court officials sorted out details so the company could settle with 41 states.
