UVA-Wise confirms former athlete killed in Virginia Beach shootings

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has confirmed a former football player and graduate was one of the people killed during a weekend shooting in the oceanfront area of Virginia Beach.

Donovan Lynch, 25, was an offensive lineman for the Wise County school beginning in 2017 and received his degree in 2019.

Virginia Beach Chief of Police Paul Neudigate initially said Lynch was armed and then was shot and killed by a city police officer. Neudigate later told reporters that a weapon was found in the vicinity of the incident but it was not known if Lynch carried the weapon.

The department reported that the officer that shot Lynch did not have his body camera activated and has been placed on leave.
