Gov. Northam proposes amendment to redirect coal tax credits savings to UVA-Wise
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is asking lawmakers to consider redirecting potential savings from ending coal tax credits to send to UVA-Wise.
Legislation passed in this year’s General Assembly is set to eliminate coal tax credits in 2022, which follows a report from the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission who found a pair of coal tax credits created to benefit Southwest Virginia’s economy has actually generated economic losses for the state.
Northam has proposed dedicating the financial savings to head to expanding course offerings in data science, computer science, and renewable energy for UVA-Wise.
