VSP: Driver ejected, killed during wreck Saturday on I-81 in Washington County

One person is dead after being ejected from their vehicle in a crash Saturday in Washington County, Virginia.

According to a preliminary report from Virginia State Police, the wreck happened on Interstate 81 around mile marker 31 around 3:20 p.m., when a sedan traveling north was unable to slow down enough for stopped traffic that had slowed to merge for a work zone.

The sedan rear-ended an SUV, causing the sedan to run off the right side of the road, overturned, which threw the driver from the vehicle. The sedan driver died at the scene while no injuries were reported to the SUV motorist.

The crash remains under investigation.
