Norton Virginia Police Chief Seriously Wounded During Shootout With Suspected Shoplifter…Who is also seriously wounded
The City of Norton Virginia’s Police Chief is seriously wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a suspected shoplifter at a commercial business on Friday. The Norton Police Department received an emergency call concerning a shoplifter within the 600 block of Commonwealth Drive in the City of Norton around four o’clock Friday afternoon. That’s when Police Chief James Lane pulled up and encountered a male pedestrian. That man, now identified as 35 year old James Dyer Buckland of Pound Virginia pulled a weapon and began firing into Chief Lane’s vehicle, striking the chief, who then returned fire, Along with another Norton Police Officer fired at Buckland, who was also seriously injured in the exchange of gunfire. Chief Lane was flown to Johnson City Medical Center where he was being treated for serious injuries. Buckland is charged with numerous transgressions including Attempted Capital Murder of a Police Officer.
