Recidivism rate in Virginia among the lowest in the US
Virginia’s recidivism rate remains among the lowest in the country.
Data released by the Department of Corrections shows 24 percent of convicts released from their facilities end up back in either jail or prison within three years of release.
During the 2016 fiscal year, more than 12,500 state-responsible inmates were released and fewer than 3,000 of them were re-incarcerated—the lowest percentage among the 42 states that actively publish those figures.
