Struggling Renters May Have Additional Help On The Way In Virginia
Southwest Virginians who are struggling to avoid being evicted because of unpaid rent during the pandemic, appear to have help on the way. The Democratically controlled House and Senate approved a key protection against evictions and a new round of funding would be secured if the bill advances in the special called session of the Virginia General Assembly. The bill would reinstate a significant protection that requires a landlord to apply for rental assistance on their tenants behalf before an eviction for non payment of rent can proceed. As of July 14, more than 308 million dollars has been paid out statewide to support more than 48 thousand households across the Commonwealth.
