UPDATE: Man accused shooting Norton police chief indicted on 17 charges
The man accused of shooting Norton Chief of Police James Lane has been indicted by a Wise County grand jury on 17 charges.
James Dyer Buckland, 36, will have his first hearing in Circuit Court on Aug. 23 and has a majority of felonies lodged against him including attempted murder, assault and battery, and aggravated malicious wounding.
Chief Lane was responding to a shoplifting call when investigators said Buckland walked up to Lane’s SUV and began shooting. Buckland was shot by officers when Lane returned fire.
