SWVA Man Fighting For Unemployment Benefits, That Were Taken Away.
A southwest Virginia man, who worked 26 years at the now closed Bristol Compressors, is fighting the Commonwealth of Virginia to keep 9 thousand dollars in unemployment benefits Virginia gave him after he was laid off. That’s when 57 year old Ernest Ray began looking for a job which is a state requirement. Ray missed one week of job search documentation due to a minor illness but received a doctors note saying he was able to work. VEC told Ray he was deemed unable to work, despite the doctors note. Now the agency wants the money back. Ray’s attorney says the case shows a radically dysfunctional state agency. Governor elect Glen Youngkin campaigned on overhauling the Commission, but has yet to announce specifics.
