Washington County, Tennessee Detention Center adopts digital tablet program for inmates
Washington County, Tennessee Sheriff Keith Sexton says the detention center is adopting an inmate tablet program to help generate revenue for the facility. In March, Sexton told the public the department has amassed a significant amount of debt under the previous administration, which includes more than $2 million in unpaid inmate medical bills.
This tablet program will help generate revenue by giving inmates the option to pay a fee for using apps on the device. Sexton says the tablets are considered a privilege for inmates, and those wishing to use them must meet certain criteria. Inmates will never be able to access social media or email, the tablets will serve to provide educational and rehabilitative material such as books, magazines, and GED study guides. Sexton says he expects the tablets to become available to inmates soon.
