SWVA: Galax Animal Shelter says wild fox tests positive for rabies; warns pet owners of possible exposure
Officials with the Galax, Carroll, and Grayson Animal Shelter in Southwest Virginia warn area residents of a rabid fox recently discovered in a residential neighborhood. They say a live red fox was found on the porch of a home on Pine Knoll Drive in Galax on Tuesday, which tested positive for rabies.
Residents reported hearing a possible animal fight before the fox was discovered. Shelter officials tell pet owners to report any potential contact with the fox to Galax Police or the Galax Health Dept., and to watch for any rabies symptoms in pets throughout the coming months. Officials say any mammal, including humans, can contract rabies; and the disease becomes fatal once symptoms appear.
